Proposing in Berlin and Potsdam: 12 places for the big question
Nobody counts how many people in Berlin go down on one knee each year. The only count is of those who actually marry afterwards: in 2025 it was 11,235 couples, fewer than ever since 1991. All the more reason for the question to deserve a place that suits the two of you. Here are twelve, from high up to out on the water, most of them without tourist crowds.
All year Humboldthöhe, Körnerpark, Molecule Man, radio tower
Summer half only Flatow Tower, Belvedere Pfingstberg, rowing boat
Quiet Körnerpark, Peacock Island, Liebermann garden
With a view Radio tower, Humboldthöhe, Flatow Tower, Belvedere
First, the most important question: in public or not?
In a 2018 survey by a card company, more than a third of respondents said the proposal happened at home. That is no coincidence: not everyone likes an audience when things get emotional. If you want to propose outdoors, it is best to pick a place where you can be alone for a moment. Most of the places below were chosen with exactly that in mind.
The classic
Brandenburg Gate and TV tower
Iconic, but with selfie sticks, tour groups and street music in the background.
Kieznah tip
The Humboldthöhe early in the morning
All of Berlin spread out below you, and at that hour you often have the top to yourselves. Then breakfast in the neighborhood.
In Berlin
01 On the Humboldthöhe · Gesundbrunnen
about 8 minutes on foot from Gesundbrunnen station
The old flak tower in the Humboldthain park now carries a viewing platform. A wartime site where you make a promise for the future: that carries weight. Loveliest early in the morning or at sunset. More in Ringbahn part 5.
02 In the Humboldthain rose garden · Gesundbrunnen
At the foot of the same park lies a rose garden modelled on Italian Renaissance gardens, with a bronze Diana. The perfect pairing: the question up top, the roses below, or the other way round.
03 In a rowing boat on the Neuer See · Tiergarten
At the Café am Neuen See in the Tiergarten you can hire a rowing boat in the warmer months. Out on the water nobody can hear you, and nobody can run away either. Hold on tight to the ring.
04 In front of the Körnerpark orangery · Neukölln
about 8 minutes on foot from Neukölln station
The park lies five to seven meters below street level, with flower beds and an orangery, and feels like a small palace garden. The noise of the city stays up above. More in our 12 places off the path.
05 At the Molecule Man at sunset · Treptow
about 6 minutes on foot from Treptower Park station
Three aluminum figures hold on to each other in the middle of the Spree, right where East and West used to be divided. A symbol of togetherness, and from the bank you watch the sun set over the water. More in Ringbahn part 2.
06 On the radio tower · Westend
about 8 minutes on foot from Messe Nord/ICC station
The platform of the hundred-year-old "Langer Lulatsch" sits at about 126 meters, open to the sky, and has been open again since March 2026. You can hardly say yes any higher in Berlin. It closes in storms and icy weather, so check beforehand. More in Ringbahn part 4.
07 Outside Schöneberg town hall at noon · Schöneberg
about 10 minutes on foot from Innsbrucker Platz station
For anyone with a sense of timing: the Freedom Bell rings in the tower every day at noon. Ask the question right then and the bells come free. More in Ringbahn part 3.
08 On Peacock Island · Wannsee
A little ferry, an island of meadows, old trees, peacocks and a small white palace, all part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. You are often almost alone here. The last crossing to the island leaves 45 minutes before closing, and dogs and bikes stay on the shore. More in Skip X, try Y.
09 In the Liebermann Villa garden · Wannsee
Max Liebermann designed his garden on the Großer Wannsee himself and painted it again and again. Flowers, hedges, a view of the water, and afterwards a slice of cake in the café. More in our 12 more places off the path.
In Potsdam
Potsdam is in fare zone C, so you need a Berlin ABC ticket or the Deutschlandticket for the trip.
10 On the Flatow Tower · Babelsberg
about 23 minutes on foot from Babelsberg station
A 46-meter tower in Babelsberg Park with a wraparound platform and views over the park, the Havel and the city. Open at weekends from May to October, closed in winter. More in our Babelsberg article.
11 On the Glienicke Bridge · Potsdam und Berlin
In the GDR it was called the "Bridge of Unity", and during the Cold War East and West swapped their spies here. It is hard to find a better place to join two lives, and you stand right between Berlin and Potsdam. Best reached by a walk along the shore through Babelsberg Park.
12 On the Belvedere on the Pfingstberg · Potsdam
An Italian-style viewing palace on a hill in the north of Potsdam, with views over the city and the lakes. In October 2026 it opens Tuesday to Sunday, and it is closed from November to February. Admission is 8 euros, 6 euros reduced; check times at pfingstberg.de.
To make it work
Check opening times and seasons beforehand, as many towers close in winter or in storms. Have a plan B for rain, for example the planetarium with a starry sky above you. If you want a photo of the moment, ask a friend to wait discreetly nearby. And keep the ring in an inside pocket; the reason is in Is Berlin dangerous?.
