How we choose

Eating vegetarian in Berlin is easy: almost every menu has meat-free dishes, and many mark vegan ones. So we only list places that are entirely vegetarian or vegan, and only if the operator says so on its own website. The same rule applies to halal, and because we cannot check certificates, you will find guidance below rather than a list.

Three checked addresses

01 Cookies Cream · Mitte

about 6 minutes on foot from Brandenburger Tor station

According to the operator, a high-end vegan and vegetarian restaurant with one Michelin star, at Behrenstraße 55. It serves a vegetarian tasting menu that can be prepared fully vegan on request, best mentioned when you book. The entrance is hidden, through the back courtyard according to the Michelin Guide. The evenings and prices are on the website, and you should book a table in advance.

02 Satyam · Charlottenburg

about 5 minutes on foot from Ernst-Reuter-Platz U-Bahn station, about 11 minutes from Savignyplatz S-Bahn station

At Goethestraße 5, Satyam cooks purely vegan and vegetarian according to its own website, Ayurvedic and with South Indian specialities. Monday to Friday there is a quick lunch from noon to 5 pm, and on Sundays a vegan-vegetarian brunch buffet. On Saturdays the restaurant offers an Ayurvedic cooking class, with registration via the website.

03 Brammibal's Donuts on Maybachufer · Neukölln

about 6 minutes on foot from Schönleinstraße U-Bahn station

According to the operator, all the donuts are vegan, with seasonal flavours. For every Strawberry Sprinkles donut sold, Brammibal's says it donates 50 cents to non-profit organisations. The shop at Maybachufer 8 is on the Landwehrkanal, and on Tuesdays and Fridays it pairs well with the weekly market next door, more in Turkish Berlin.

Eating halal: how to find it

In Neukölln, Kreuzberg and Wedding, especially around Sonnenallee, Kottbusser Damm and Müllerstraße, many snack bars, restaurants and supermarkets display a halal notice. Only the operator can say whether and how this is checked. If in doubt, ask directly about the certificate or where the meat comes from, and check whether alcohol is served if that matters to you. Where Berlin's Arab and Turkish kitchens are at home is in Arab Berlin and Turkish Berlin.

Good to know

  • On the menu: vegetarian dishes are often marked with a V or a leaf. Ask about sauces and stocks, which sometimes contain meat or fish.
  • Allergies: restaurants must be able to state the 14 main allergens, so just ask for the allergen list.
  • During Ramadan: many restaurants with Arab or Turkish cuisine are especially busy after sunset, more about iftar in Arab Berlin.
