First visit
Berlin's classics in one day on foot: from the Reichstag to the TV Tower
Eight of Berlin's classics lie almost in a line, and you can see them in one day on foot. Here is the order that works, with walking times between the stops, opening times and the two things you should book in advance.
8 stops from the Reichstag to the TV Tower
About 65 minutes of pure walking, a full day with visits
Free Reichstag dome (with registration), Brandenburg Gate, Information Centre, Bebelplatz
Monday not the right day: the Neues Museum and the Information Centre are closed
How the day works
The route runs in one line from west to east, without detours and without the U-Bahn in between. In the morning you are at the Reichstag dome before the groups arrive, at midday on the Unter den Linden boulevard, in the afternoon on Museum Island and at sunset on the TV Tower. If you are short of time, skip the detour to Gendarmenmarkt and save about 20 minutes.
The route
01 Reichstag dome · Tiergarten
about 5 minutes on foot from Bundestag U-Bahn station
Directions in Google Maps · Official site
According to the Bundestag, visiting the glass dome is free but only possible with registration, online with your surname, first name and date of birth. Bring the same photo ID you used to register. It is open daily from 8 am to midnight, with last entry around 10 pm. Several times a year the dome closes for a few days for maintenance, in October 2026 according to reports from 19 to 30 October. Check your date on bundestag.de beforehand. Walk-ins sometimes work at the service office on Platz der Republik, but are not guaranteed.
02 Brandenburg Gate · Mitte
about 4 minutes on foot from the Reichstag
There is nothing to pay and no queue at the gate itself. The best photo is early in the morning from the east side on Pariser Platz, when the sun is behind you. The Pilecki Institute is right on the square, more in part 7 of our series.
03 Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe · Mitte
about 6 minutes on foot from the Brandenburg Gate to the Information Centre
Directions in Google Maps · Official site
The field of stelae is open around the clock. The Information Centre beneath it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, last entry 5:15 pm, and entry is free. Allow at least an hour here, and please do not climb on the stelae. More in Jewish Berlin.
04 Unter den Linden and Bebelplatz · Mitte
about 15 minutes on foot from the Information Centre
You head east along Unter den Linden, past Humboldt University and the State Opera. On Bebelplatz, students and Nazis burned books on 10 May 1933. Since 1995, Micha Ullman's Library has commemorated this in the ground: a glass window looking down onto empty shelves. You can see in best when the sun is not reflecting.
05 Gendarmenmarkt (detour) · Mitte
about 6 minutes on foot from Bebelplatz
Two almost identical domed towers with the Konzerthaus between them: Gendarmenmarkt is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful squares in Berlin. In the French Cathedral, the Huguenot Museum tells how religious refugees from France came to Berlin, more in part 2. From here it is about 14 minutes to Museum Island.
06 Museum Island and Neues Museum · Mitte
about 9 minutes straight from Bebelplatz, about 14 minutes from Gendarmenmarkt
If you only manage one museum, choose the Neues Museum with the bust of Nefertiti. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, admission is 14 euros, 7 euros reduced, free under 18, and booking a time slot online saves waiting. Important for planning: the Pergamonmuseum is closed for renovation and, according to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, does not reopen until 4 June 2027.
07 Berlin Cathedral · Mitte
about 4 minutes on foot from the Neues Museum
Directions in Google Maps · Official site
In the cathedral it is worth climbing to the dome walkway, 270 steps up with a view over Museum Island. The Hohenzollern crypt has been open again since March 2026 after restoration. Entry is free for under-18s, and the cathedral lists the current price on its website. Visits are not possible during services.
08 TV Tower · Mitte
about 11 minutes on foot from Berlin Cathedral
Directions in Google Maps · Official site
To finish, you go up to 203 metres; according to the operator the lift takes about 40 seconds. On a clear day the view reaches far into the surrounding countryside. Tickets with a fixed time slot are cheaper online than at the box office, and if you want to be up there for sunset, it is best to book a few days ahead.
Good to know
- The best day: Tuesday to Friday. On Mondays the Neues Museum and the Information Centre are closed, and at weekends everywhere is busier.
- Book two things in advance: the Reichstag dome and, if you like, a time slot for the TV Tower. Everything else can be done on the spot.
- Breaks: lunch fits well between Bebelplatz and Museum Island. On Sundays most shops are closed, but cafés and restaurants are open, more in Sunday in Berlin.
- Too crowded? There is a quieter alternative for every classic, in Skip X, try Y.
