Sunday in Berlin: what to do when the shops are closed
If you want to go shopping in Berlin on a Sunday, you will find the doors locked. If you want to experience the city, you have picked the best day of the week. On Sundays Berlin belongs to Berliners: less traffic, full parks, flea markets on the squares. Here is both: what is open on Sundays, and how to spend the day the way we do with our own guests.
Why that is so is explained in our unwritten rules for Berlin. In short: Sunday is a legal day of rest here, and Berlin's otherwise generous shop opening law changes little about that. So the real Berlin Sunday rule is: buy on Saturday whatever you need on Sunday.
01 What is open on Sundays
| What | Sundays? | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Shops in stations and at BER | yes | Travel supplies are allowed. Large stations such as the main station or Ostbahnhof have supermarkets open on Sundays, check first. |
| Bakeries | yes, for a few hours | Mostly in the morning, many close in the early afternoon. |
| Petrol stations, pharmacies | yes | Pharmacies only on emergency duty, not every one is open. |
| Spätis (corner shops) | officially no | According to the Berlin administrative court they must in principle close on Sundays. Many open anyway, but you cannot rely on it. |
| Museums | yes | A normal opening day and busy accordingly. |
| Restaurants, cafés | yes | Our experience: from 11 am, brunch without a reservation gets difficult. |
Shopping Sundays 2026: There are four this year; the remaining ones are 6 and 20 December, both during Christmas market season. Shops may then open from 1 pm to 8 pm but do not have to. Our Christmas market guide goes with it.
02 Flea markets: the classic and the better choice
The classic
Mauerpark flea market
Every Sunday, usually from 10 am to 6 pm: crowded, loud and famous, with street food and karaoke next door.
Kieznah tip
Arkonaplatz first
A few minutes' walk away: smaller, calmer, with GDR bric-a-brac and books. Browse here first, then head over to the Mauerpark once it has filled up.
| Market | When | Bustle | For whom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mauerpark | Sundays, usually 10 am to 6 pm | First-timers, atmosphere, street food | |
| Arkonaplatz ♥ | Sundays, summer 10 am to 5 pm, winter 10 am to 4 pm | Collectors, GDR design, books | |
| Boxhagener Platz | Sundays from the morning, check times first | Records, retro, a café in the neighborhood afterwards | |
| Rathaus Schöneberg | Sat and Sun, 8 am to 4 pm | Neighborhood market, covered stalls, people haggle |
The bustle dots are our assessment. Dates and times change, so check the market's own page before you go. More about the market at Rathaus Schöneberg in Skip X, try Y.
Bearpit Karaoke: In the Mauerpark amphitheater, strangers sing in front of hundreds of spectators on Sunday afternoons. It runs from spring into late autumn and only when it is not raining. In winter it does not take place.
03 Museums: the free museum Sunday is history
Many articles still promise free admission on the first Sunday of the month. That is no longer true: Berlin's museum Sunday last ran on 1 December 2024 and was dropped because of cuts to the culture budget. What you can still get in 2026:
- KINDL, the centre for contemporary art in Neukölln, is free on the first Sunday of the month.
- The Spandau Citadel offers free entry on almost every first Sunday of the month with its Zitadellensonntag.
- The permanent exhibition at the Jewish Museum is always free; special exhibitions charge admission.
- On 25 October 2026, the Brücke Museum, Georg Kolbe Museum, Haus am Waldsee and Kunsthaus Dahlem open free of charge from 10 am, a one-off made possible by a private donation.
The classic
Museum Island on a Sunday
The big museums are at their busiest on Sundays.
Kieznah tip
The small museums in the southwest
On Sunday, go to the Brücke Museum by the Grunewald and save Museum Island for a weekday.
04 Breakfast and green spaces
On Sundays Berlin has a late, long breakfast. If you want a table after 11 am, better book; our favorite places are in Where Berliners actually eat. Then head outside: Tempelhofer Feld, the Grunewald, the Schlachtensee. Sunday shows how much space this city has. More places that guidebooks leave out are in our 12 places off the path.
05 Your Sunday by weather and mood
| If it is … | and you want … | then |
|---|---|---|
| sunny | to people-watch | Mauerpark: flea market at midday, karaoke in the afternoon (in season) |
| sunny | peace and quiet | Arkonaplatz in the morning, then through the side streets to Prenzlauer Berg |
| sunny | open space | Tempelhofer Feld with a picnic from Saturday's shopping |
| grey or wet | culture | Small museums in the southwest instead of Museum Island |
| cold | warmth and food | A long breakfast, then a museum in the same neighborhood |
| December | shopping | Shopping Sunday on 6 or 20 December, combined with a Christmas market |
You can make all the journeys in between by bus and train on Sundays too. How tickets and zones work is explained in Understanding Berlin public transport in 10 minutes.
