Clubs in Berlin: the door, the rules and your first night

For many visitors, a night in a club is the reason for the trip. But Berlin clubs work differently from most cities: the door decides, photos are taboo, and the best moment is often Sunday morning. Here is what to know before you go.

Heritage Berlin techno culture on the national inventory since 2024

Why Berlin of all places

After the Wall fell, many buildings stood empty, especially in the east of the city, and clubs sprang up in basements, power stations and old factories. That became a scene known around the world today. In March 2024 the German Commission for UNESCO added Berlin techno culture to Germany’s national inventory of intangible cultural heritage.

The door

  • No guarantee: the door decides who gets in, usually without giving a reason. Do not take it personally and have a plan B.
  • Small groups: in twos or threes it is usually easier than with six people.
  • Know where you are: if you know who is playing that night, you look like someone who came for the music.
  • Sober enough: if you are already swaying in the queue, you rarely get in.
  • Stay calm: being loud, filming or arguing in the queue never helps.

Inside

  • No photos: many clubs ban photography, and the door often puts a sticker over your phone camera. It is part of the feeling that nobody is being watched here.
  • Awareness: many clubs have awareness teams you can turn to if someone harasses you or you are not feeling well.
  • Drugs: cannabis has been legal for adults within narrow limits since April 2024, but in a club the house rules apply. Other drugs remain illegal.
  • Cash and cloakroom: some clubs only take cash at the door, and the cloakroom usually costs a few euros.

When to go

Many clubs are quiet before midnight. Plenty of Berliners only go late at night or on Sunday morning, when the queues are shorter and some parties run into the afternoon. For something calmer the day after, see Sunday in Berlin.

Clubs come and go

The scene changes all the time. Watergate by the Oberbaumbrücke closed at the turn of 2024/25 after 22 years, and other clubs move or take a break. That is why there is no list of addresses here that would be out of date in six months. Check on the day whether a club is open and what is on.

Dancing without a door

If you want to dance without facing a strict door, go to a bar with a DJ. Our tip is the Promenaden Eck in the Schillerkiez, more in Bars and pubs in Berlin. In summer there are open-air parties in parks and by the water; what is on in the warm months is in Berlin in summer.

Getting home safely

On Friday and Saturday nights the U-Bahn and S-Bahn run all night; during the week night buses take over. How the network works is in BVG in 10 minutes, and what to watch out for at night in Is Berlin dangerous?.

General advice from experience and public sources (German Commission for UNESCO, BVG, reports on the closure of Watergate), as of October 2026. No paid mentions. The rules of each club are on the club’s own channels.
