Berlin Christmas markets 2026: which ones are worth it and when they open

Most Berlin Christmas markets open on 23 November 2026, the day after Germany's Sunday of the Dead, and close shortly before or after Christmas. visitBerlin lists more than 100 markets and winter events. These are the ones we recommend to friends, plus the markets that only run on a single weekend.

Kieznah · Season · About 7 minutes · Updated October 2026

01 At Charlottenburg Palace · 23.11.–27.12.2026

If you only manage one market, make it this one. The stalls stand in front of the palace's baroque facade, lit up in the evening, and the square is large enough to move around without being pushed. Get there by bus or walk from Richard-Wagner-Platz U-Bahn station.

02 WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt · 23.11.–31.12.2026

The city's best-known market, set between the German and French Cathedrals and the Konzerthaus. Lots of crafts, white tents, and it is one of the few markets that charges admission. Weekend evenings are packed accordingly, weekday early evenings are far more relaxed.

03 Alt-Rixdorf Christmas market · 4.–6.12.2026

Only one weekend a year, and that is exactly its charm. Around Richardplatz in the old Bohemian village in the middle of Neukölln, many of the stalls are run by local associations and initiatives. If you are in Berlin that weekend, plan it in.

04 Advent market at Domäne Dahlem · every Advent weekend

Domäne Dahlem is a working farm with a museum in the leafy southwest. During Advent there are crafts, stalls across the farmyard and animals in the barn. Good with kids and a world away from the crowds in Mitte.

05 Lucia Christmas market at Kulturbrauerei · 23.11.–22.12.2026

A market with a Scandinavian touch in the courtyards of the old brick brewery in Prenzlauer Berg. Compact, easy to reach and a natural way to end a day in the neighborhood.

06 Advent at Natur-Park Südgelände · 28/29 Nov and 5/6 Dec 2026

A former railway yard in Schöneberg where nature has taken back the tracks. On two Advent weekends a small market sets up between trees, old rails and industrial relics. Priesterweg S-Bahn station is right at the entrance.

07 Köpenick Christmas island · 11.–13.12.2026

Three days at Köpenick Palace on its island in the river Dahme. If you make the trip to the southeast, combine it with a walk through Köpenick's old town.

08 Spandau Christmas market · 23.11.–22.12.2026

Spandau has one of Berlin's few surviving historic town centers, and the market runs through its lanes and across the market square. Bigger than most central markets and good for an afternoon if you want to see the Citadel anyway.

At Alexanderplatz, the Red City Hall and Potsdamer Platz, Christmas is more of a funfair with rides and ice rinks than a market. That can be fun, but it is rarely cozy. If you want lights rather than mulled wine in the evening: Christmas Garden at the Botanical Garden is a ticketed light trail (18 Nov 2026 to 10 Jan 2027).

Beyond the markets: Baumkuchen from Buchwald

Baumkuchen, the layered "tree cake", is the Christmas treat people bring home from Berlin, and one address for it is Konditorei G. Buchwald on Bartningallee, between Hansaviertel and Moabit near the river Spree. The family business was founded in 1852 in Cottbus and still bakes its Baumkuchen to its own house recipe; you cannot miss the lettering above the door.

The café is furnished like a Viennese coffee house, with a long cake counter. Baumkuchen is sold here all year, but during Advent it is the most popular gift to take home. It is a few minutes' walk from Bellevue S-Bahn station.

How to keep a market visit relaxed

  • Come on weekday early evenings; Friday and Saturday nights are the busiest everywhere.
  • Mulled wine comes in a mug with a deposit. Return it or keep it as a souvenir, both are common.
  • Bring cash. Many stalls take cards, far from all.
  • Most markets close on Christmas Eve, and some reopen afterwards until New Year's Eve or early January.
