The Rheingau wine fountain on Rüdesheimer Platz: wine under the trees in Wilmersdorf

How the wine fountain works

In summer, a bar stands on the terrace above the Siegfried Fountain where rotating wine estates from the Rheingau-Taunus district pour wine and sparkling wine, usually for a few weeks at a time. Neighbours bring picnics, sit on benches under the trees, and for a few months the square becomes Wilmersdorf's largest living room. According to the district office, there were 103 serving days in 2023, open Monday to Saturday from 3 pm to 10 pm.

The wine fountain is popular but not uncontroversial. Following a court ruling in 2019, conditions apply to limit noise, including the Sunday rest day, a cap on the number of guests on the terrace and closing at 10 pm. Being considerate, leaving quietly and taking your rubbish with you helps keep the wine fountain going.

The bar is on the terrace above the Siegfried Fountain of 1911. The district has been linked with the Rheingau-Taunus district since 1972, as a partnership since 1991, and the wine fountain is its most visible part. The story of the square with its country-house-style buildings is told in our neighbourhood walk through Wilmersdorf.

Good to know

  • Come early: on warm evenings the benches fill up quickly, so a blanket for the grass is a good idea.
  • When it starts again: the season usually begins in May, and the district announces the start and the list of winemakers in spring.
  • In autumn and winter: ideas for the cooler season are in Berlin in autumn.
