Seasons
Berlin in autumn: open monuments, lights and golden forests
Autumn is Berlin's underrated season. The summer crowds are gone, the air is clear, and the forests at the edge of the city glow. On top of that come two weekends when Berlin opens its doors and lights up its buildings. Here is what is worth doing in autumn.
The classic
Festival of Lights in October
Light projections on well-known buildings in the center, beautiful but packed in the evening.
Kieznah tip
Heritage Days in September
A weekend when hundreds of buildings open that are normally closed. Berlin from the inside.
01 September: Heritage Days
On the second weekend of September Berlin opens its monuments. In 2026, on 12 and 13 September, there were over 350 sites with around 1,000 events, under the theme "monuments & infrastructure". Most are free, guided tours often require registration, and the program is published in summer. If you already know Berlin, you see it anew that weekend.
02 October: Festival of Lights
For around ten days in October, well-known buildings are lit up with light art in the evening, in 2026 from 9 to 18 October. Watching is free. Our advice: not at the weekend and not right after dark, but on a weekday and later in the evening.
03 Harvest time at Domäne Dahlem
In early October Domäne Dahlem, a farm in the middle of the city, holds its harvest festival, followed by an autumn market in mid-October. The foundation announces dates and admission shortly beforehand each year. There is also an organic market every Saturday all year round, see Skip X, try Y.
04 Golden forests
Berlin's best autumn colors are at the edge of the city. The shore path around the Schlachtensee, about 5.5 kilometers, is at its loveliest in October, then carry on to the Krumme Lanke. If you want art too, combine the Grunewald with the Brücke Museum at the forest's edge. And the neighborhood walk through Wilmersdorf works even when the wine fountain on the Rüdi has closed for the season.
05 Autumn tips from Berliners
- From October the weather can turn quickly. Plan an indoor alternative for every day; ideas are in Berlin in winter.
- At the end of October the clocks go back, and after that it gets dark early.
- In November the anticipation already begins: the first Christmas markets open at the end of the month.
